Daragh O Brien is the founder and managing director of Castlebridge, one of Ireland’s leading data strategy consultancy and education providers. Daragh has spent his professional life working on the interface of technology and business in a career that goes back to the mid-1990s (when he was still an undergrad in UCD, working with a start-up software company). 

Prior to founding Castlebridge, Daragh was a programme manager in a leading Irish telco for 12 years, in roles responsible for Single View of Customer strategy, data quality change programmes, and regulatory assurance. Since 2009 Daragh has led Castlebridge in client engagements in a range of industry sectors and with clients from small start-up companies and NGOs to enterprise businesses and government departments. He has also worked with the United Nations helping in the development of data management and data ethics frameworks in developing nations.

Daragh is a Fellow of the Irish Computer Society and a Fellow of Information Privacy (IAPP). He is a syllabus consultant with the Law Society of Ireland and also lectures in the Sutherland School of Law, the Smurfit Graduate School of Business in University College Dublin, and Public Affairs Ireland. 

He sits on the Strategic Advisory Board to the School of Business in NUI Maynooth and a contributor to the Innovation Value Institute in NUI Maynooth. He has been an active contributor to frameworks such as the DAMA DMBOK and the IT-CMF, and is a contributing member of the Leaders’ Data Group (www.dataleaders.org), a practitioner think-tank for data leadership.

Through Castlebridge, Daragh also engages in and supports research activities across data protection, data governance, data ethics and associated disciplines in the Adapt Centre in TCD and in NUI Maynooth’s EMPOWER programme.

Daragh is the co-author of Ethical Data and Information Management: Concepts, Tools, and Methods among other publications and has been recognised by the All Ireland Business Foundation on three occasions as a though leader in data management.

He says he’s “Just a boy, looking at an organisation and its approach to data, wondering ‘What the F?’”
