Introduction

The evolution of Earth observation allows to collect more and more granular data. Satellites, drones, and other technologies are capturing increasingly detailed imagery of our planet, which raises new questions on how to preserve privacy and ensure data protection by design and by default. It also raises challenges in terms of data subject rights, such as the right to access and the right to be forgotten. This session will present some good practices and solutions to take advantage of Earth observation while preserving privacy and fundamental rights.

Key questions and objectives

  • How do advancements in Earth observation technologies raise new privacy concerns?
  • What are the good practices and privacy enhancing technologies to support privacy and personal data protection in Earth observation?
  • What are the current norms, standards, and legal frameworks governing privacy in Earth observation activities?
