The phrase "heroic fantasy" is often used to evoke the work of authors like JRR Tolkien or Robert E. Howard, filled with mighty warriors in morally uncomplicated and politically conservative universes. Yet the tradition includes writers from Samuel R. Delany to Tanith Lee, or more recently Kameron Hurley and Kai Ashante Wilson, who challenge these preconceptions. In this session authors and critics discuss queer heroic fantasy: what is out there, how it is published, how it is read, and what its future might be.
