The work of Stephen Sondheim includes some of the most cherished musical theatre material in Broadway history. The complexities of his work transcend the music itself, richly illustrating deep, profound and conflicted characters. Sondheim’s characters are sometimes branded with the labels of heroes or villains, but often fall somewhere in between. We will explore these characters, their meaning and what the master of the modern musical has to say about heroes and villains.
