Try this thought-experiment: What would Harry Potter's life have been like if Hogwarts were less like an English boarding school and more like an American college, complete with drinking, drugs, and sex, and no Voldemort to fight? What if Harry had grown up reading fantasy novels? That's the idea (or part of it) behind a new book by Lev Grossman called The Magicians, which is coming out this August. The author will talk about the book, and do a short reading, and generally discuss the challenge of writing fantasy, and getting it published, in the post-Potter era.
