Jo Rowling knew exactly what she was doing when she invented Fawkes the Phoenix. She cleverly uses the Egyptian and Christian cultural history of a phoenix in Chamber of Secrets, Goblet of Fire, and Half-Blood Prince to show readers that in Harry's case, 'the magic is within, not without'. It is because of this resurrection lore that the phoenix feathers were chosen for Harry and Voldemort's dual cores and that Fawkes is Dumbledore's pet. This careful choice has not only hinted at the finale for the series, but also served to reinforce characterization and emphasize the vast differences between Harry and Voldemort.
