Harry Potter: Tales of Morality to Inspire the Young and Old

Theme:
Academic
When:
10:00 AM, Saturday 23 May 2009 EDT (1 hour)
Where:
Boston Park Plaza - Thoreau, 4th Floor
Building upon the work of John Granger (Finding God in Harry Potter) and Russell Dalton (Faith Journey Through Fantasy Lands), I will show how the Harry Potter series is the latest entry into the pantheon of profound and powerful morality tales that have been a part of all human history. Like all other great morality tales, the Harry Potter series has the power to transform and inspire its reader, regardless of age, to be a person of courage, humility, and compassion who responds to the call to serve the larger good in the hope and belief that peace and justice will be brought about through that service. We will emphasize this theme using examples from the HP books and correlating these examples to ones from the real world that I have also seen and experienced. Would also discuss how the virtues temperance, prudence, courage, and justice, along with faith, hope and love are all present throughout the series and inspire readers to adopt those same virtues in their own lives, and how encouraging the reading and discussion of the Potter series among people of all ages provides a forum for discussion of the larger challenges currently being addressed within society. Would finish with a Q&A session that could address any and all of those ideas.
