In considering the Harry Potter series within this genre, we need to move beyond conventional representatives -- such as Thomas Hughes and Enid Blyton -- and look towards one of Rowling's favorite books as a child: Noel Streatfeild's Ballet Shoes. Both Streatfeild and Rowling emphasize the pursuit of vocation and its attendant challenges and rewards: how the rigors of professional training, shaped by financial concerns and the emotional support of family, yield a life of purpose and fulfillment.
