Mudbloods. Pure-bloods. Half-breeds. Squibs. Muggle-lovers; all are terms that are thrown around loosely in the Harry Potter canon. What do these terms mean and how do they fit into the literary world of racism and slavery? In addition to the slavery in the Wizarding world, a new type of racism is created. Blood supremacy rules above all else, and through her marginal characters, Rowling asks the question, “Is racism taught or is racism inherent?” This panel will explore the major issues of slavery, race and what it means in the world today through the Harry Potter novels.
