Within the community of Harry Potter fans, it is a widely known fact that the British and American editions of the books are different from one another. What most people cannot seem to agree upon, however, is just how different these versions are. This presentation seeks to break down the editorial process that went into the Scholastic editions—not just grammar, colloquialisms, and semantics, but even the marketing techniques that may have influenced some of these changes. This presentation engages sources such as interviews on the topic with Scholastic’s Arthur Levine and J.K. Rowling herself, as well as humorous approaches to grammar and punctuation like Lynn Truss’s Eats, Shoots & Leaves. The ultimate goal: to create a better understanding of the process behind creating the books we read.
