Many are familiar with Joseph Campbell’s theory of the hero’s journey, the idea that every man through myth and literature grows to adulthood while battling his dark alter-ego. Valerie explores the universal heroine’s journey in ancient myths and epics from the bow-wielding Anat to the crone-goddess Spider Grandmother, upsetting popular notions of the passive, helpless girl. Like the hero’s journey, this pattern is useful for those who enjoy reading and analyzing literature, and also those who want to write it, especially fantasy and coming of age stories.
