Within the past forty years, two different sagas have captured the American consciousness and risen to such popularity that they can only be described as cultural icons: George Lucas’s film series Star Wars and J.K. Rowling’s novels about the boy wizard Harry Potter. Both sagas follow the story of a boy who was orphaned in infancy and raised far away from the world in which he was born, until a single pivotal moment reveals his destiny and sends him on a journey of self-discovery and ultimate triumph over evil. The core elements of each story, whether in the outward coverings of science fiction or magical fantasy, guarantee Harry Potter the same lasting status as Star Wars.
