1:00 PM, Saturday 2 Aug 2014 EDT (40 minutes)
Shakespeare's wise and witty fools are among the most insightful characters in the literary canon. Robert Armin called these figures "artificial fools," stressing that their foolishness was feigned, and that they were, in fact, highly intelligent. Their songs, quips, and jests provide invaluable commentary on the themes of their respective plays, and they frequently use humor to guide other characters' development. This lecture will read modern characters such as Finnick Odair, Stiles Stilinski, and the Fresh Prince as descendants of Shakespeare's artificial fools in order to better understand their narrative purpose. The lecture will further make the case that Boy Meets World's Eric Matthews exemplifies the tradition.
