Rowling’s spells reflect the diversity of real and constructed language throughout human history. In this lecture, we will explore the linguistic roots of specific spells, the languages from which Rowling drew her inspiration, and the cultural intersection of pop-culture “conlangs”. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on the deeper meanings behind spells in the HP Universe, as well as, instructed on how to explore conlanging on their own.
