Dr. Keao NeSmith (University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa) translates modern classic books into Hawaiian, an endangered language. In addition to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he has also translated The Hobbit, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Dr. NeSmith’s PhD is in Applied Linguistics from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and has taught Hawaiian and Tahitian languages, Hawaiian studies, and endangered language revitalization.

This is a reading and discussion of Harry Potter a Me Ka Pōhaku Akeakamai (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) by the book’s translator, Dr. Keao NeSmith (University of Hawaii). We'll discuss the process of creating words, translating songs while keeping a consistent rhythm, and the response from the community upon publication.This session will be presented in English and Hawaiian.
