The call and return phrase “After all this time?” “Always.” has worked its way onto every kind of Harry Potter merch, from t-shirts to friendship necklaces to home decor. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more prevalent Potter phrase. It’s the perfect way to declare your eternal love for your significant other or your bestie, or just the series in general.

But with Snape and Lily’s complicated relationship, does it necessarily deserve the position of quintessential Harry Potter quote?

We’ll take a look at the divisive dialogue itself, and how and why “Always” came to the forefront as one of the fandoms most quoted phrases, including the infamous Alan Rickman misquote and its actual origins. We’ll also look for a replacement that can encompass all of your feelings towards the franchise and bear the emotional weight within the story without the complicated connotations.
