The link between the library and Harry Potter is very clear, but does the only librarian in the books live up to her profession? We’ll discuss the role of Madam Pince throughout the series and the ways the fandom has imagined her as opposed to what a responsible Hogwarts librarian might look like. We'll examine the ways in which Hermione uses library research with varying degrees of success to back her S.P.E.W. initiative, provide Buckbeak’s defense, and blackmail Rita Skeeter, and explore what it might mean that the Horcrux books that Hermione steals for her mobile library in Deathly Hallows were removed from the shelves of Pince’s library. Together we’ll consider the ways in which characters are empowered or harmed by the successes and failures of the Hogwarts library, and perhaps even touch on the complicated nature of books— some bite, some drive you mad, some help you fight evil— in the Wizarding World.
