What does being British mean as part of education today? Megan Bettinson presents her research.

In 2014 the coalition government laid down a set of values that schools were to ‘promote’ as British Values: “democracy, personal liberty, rule of law, and tolerance and mutual respect of those with other beliefs.”

Megan investigated the two named debates on the proposals in the Commons and House of Lords, during which parliamentarians had opportunities to discuss, debate and disagree on the government’s proposals.

She looked for the hidden assumptions, ideas and motivations of the speakers with regards to British values.  In the process of uncovering the positions of the speakers, Megan also began to uncover and draw conclusions about how they viewed schools and educators themselves.

AcademiaIdentity and CultureComicsWatchmenComicsQueer
Watchmen is one of the clearest examples of when Psychology has become embedded into popular culture – specifically in comics and graphics novels. Rorschach the character, complete with ink blot imagery as his ‘face’, is undeniably psychological and when we delve a little deeper it is also possible to see the distinctly homophobic history of Psychology embedded within Watchmen. The distinct anti-psychiatry themes within Watchmen are incorporated into the distinct queerness that threads throughout some of the characters. In the words of Sally Jupiter 'Some professions, I don’t know, they attract a certain type…'

In this paper I will outline just three characters in Watchmen that are identified as queer in some way: The Silhouette, Kitty Genovese and Rorschach himself. In doing so I will not only explore queer themes in Watchmen but also go some way to unveil how intertwined Psychology and queerness are within the comic.

Learning about sex in teen magazines 1 hour 11:45 AM  -  12:45 PM  |  Bouzy
Talk
AcademiaIdentity and CultureAcademiaAdult content
Before the internet and its wealth of (mis)information was available, many teenage girls got most of their sex education from their magazines, learning about safe sex, emotions, social expectations, and physical practicalities from articles and problem pages.
Revisiting twentieth century teen magazines including JackieJust SeventeenMizz and More!, this paper will explore the voices of both producers and consumers of magazines in the confusion of messages about how to say no and when to say yes, what girls should expect from sex, and whether boys really are ‘just after one thing’. I will draw on the advice published with the magazines’ authorial voices, as well as the published letters from readers who were grappling with how to apply the magazine advice to their own lives, and consider the magazines’ aims in the ways these interactions between producer and consumer were framed.
The paper will also draw on recent survey data about women’s recollections of their own consumption of teenage magazines, to examine the way these messages about sex have stayed with readers, sometimes decades later. Prominent in those recollections are the ‘position of the fortnight’ in More! magazine, and Just Seventeen’s slogan ’to be sussed is a must, but sex under 16 is illegal’, as well as mixed emotions about the appropriateness of the magazines’ sexual content, and whether the lessons learned turned out to be useful ones, and an acknowledgement that sometimes there were simply no better sources of information available.

While many claim to have it, or understand it, or study it, it is notoriously difficult to define what the "hacker mindset" is. As a former "ethical hacker" I have my own working definition, which I will illustrate through my experience of spending far too much time playing the Ubisoft video game Watch_Dogs. While the game was all about hacking, an understanding of the creative way that hackers think was noticeably absent from the game's design and development. This absence was highlighted in the way that a few players were able to gain a disproportionate advantage against other gamers, and against the game itself, using their "Hacker Mindset".

Fairy tale figures and motifs permeate pop culture. Despite their reputation for being children’s stories, fairy tales more often tackle distinctly adult and unsavoury issues such as rape, cannibalism, domestic violence child abuse and incest. In this session we take a good long look at the darker side of the fairy tale and some of the surprising places that the fairy tale pops up.

This talk explores the persistence of a certain kind of technology in animation culture. Typically assembled from household objects, designed to complete simple domestic chores in an over-elaborate manner, 'mousetrap machinery' appears in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', 'The Goonies', 'Little Big Planet' and, more recently 'Sing'. It is also a staple of Aardman Animation's the Wallace and Gromit series. The meaning of this machinery, and its longevity, is examined in relation to animation and modernity, children and screen culture, and tensions between utopian and dystopian perceptions of technologies' impact on everyday life. Includes extensive film and video clips.

AcademiaMoviesPerformance ArtFilmHorrorwerewolvesheavy metalAcademic
Heavy metal artists adopt and adapt the howling of wolves to unite and excite their audiences, much as horror film directors use diegetic sound to extract the desired effect from their viewers. Among wolves, howling is a form of communication. Howling in heavy metal music is used as a literal sound and as a metaphor, ranging from certain sonic effects to vocalizations. Each heavy metal howl sound produced, whether it be real or synthetic, has lupine tendencies threaded within it, (the growling, wavering, and vibrato that are associated with the wolf’s howl). Horror film directors use howls to lead into a different emotion: fear. A wolf’s howl in horror films indicates that something wicked this way comes, often in the form of a werewolf or a nefarious monster.  Whether it be in heavy metal music, a horror text, or in real life, the howl of the wolf is a source of communication to a wide audience.

Redemption is a common theme in science fiction, from Anakin Skywalker rejecting the Dark Side to save his son to  Russell Casse pulling himself together and flying his aeroplane into the heart of a deadly alien mothership. This panel examines the trope in detail, looking at both the best and worst examples, and asking whether it has become cliché.
Truth or Fact? 1 hour 3:15 PM  -  4:15 PM  |  Epernay
Panel
AcademiaBooks
The historian John Guy, talking about prospective students who cite Hilary Mantel's novels as sources for their historical knowledge, says that the “blur between fact and fiction is troubling”. Mantel, in her 2017 Reith lectures, maintains that 'facts are not truth': history is just 'what’s left in the sieve when the centuries have run through it'. Our panellists will discuss facts, alternative facts and absolute and relative truths in historical fiction: can authors ever escape their own mores? Should historical novels aim for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Are historians, as well as novelists, creative?
Neurodiversity As Superpower 1 hour 3:15 PM  -  4:15 PM  |  Reims

In the Percy Jackson series, Percy learns that his dyslexia and ADHD are symptoms of his demi-god-hood, not actual disabilities. Autistic children onscreen often have hidden knowledge or power just waiting to be unlocked. The urban fantasy genre is filled with protagonists who struggle from PTSD or schizophrenia-like symptoms, which really mask a supernatural ability. Is the old Disability as Superpower trope now evolving into Neurodiversity as Superpower?

Panellists discuss these issues, using examples from SFF and their own writing or life experiences to illustrate what may well be a growing trend in genre fiction.

AcademiaFandomsDoctor WhoArchaeology
During its fifty-four year history the BBC television drama series Doctor Who has often featured archaeological sites as scenes of ancient extraterrestrial activity. From British stone circles and barrows to doomed excavations at Saqqara and the ice-tombs of the planet Telos, serials with an archaeological basis have drawn heavily upon literary and cinematic tropes in order to present tales of overt horror, pushing the boundaries of acceptable early-evening television viewing. This heavily illustrated lecture will consider the ways in which popular conceptions of archaeology, particularly in the 1970s, combined with the BBC's own 'Gothic sensibilities' during that period in order to create television dramas of considerable and enduring power.

AcademiaSciencemathsZombies
The flesh-hungry shambling horrors of George Romero and beyond are clearly no simple virus. That said, there are many ways in which a zombie outbreak behaves much like a disease outbreak, and epidemiologists and statisticians have spent more than a century modelling such incidents to better understand how infections spread.

In this talk, I shall outline in layperson’s language some of the foundational concepts of these mathematical models for the spread of infection, and explore how they operate when the specific properties of a zombie-virus are assumed. How long can humanity survive? Can we actually fight back and defeat the horde? And how exactly can we mathematically account for Rick Grimes? These and other burning questions will be answered in this presentation.

AcademiaMoviescult film
The term ‘cult cinema’ is an extremely imprecise and contested category. What constitutes a ‘cult’ film is, like many generic labels, hard to identify. A combination of production practices, cinema exhibition strategies, and fan activity, there is little in terms of content to connect such films as ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’, ‘Pink Flamingos’ and ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. Nevertheless, the term ‘cult’ seems appropriate to all three. The process by which cult films emerge is complex, and one which crystallises many of the complexities of screen exhibition and consumption, together with the historical forces which impact upon the meaning of media texts. This talk unpicks these processes, with reference to a range of compelling examples of cult cinema, and opens out the discussion of cult media to include television and videogames.

AcademiaBooksScience
If you’re writing the kind of story where spacecraft are a central feature then you probably want to put some thought into their design. But even if they’re just serving as a location or backdrop, you can jar your readers’ immersion with a spaceship that contradicts their expectations too badly.

Space travel in science fiction often draws parallels with the sea; fictional spacecraft often feel a lot like ships; to the point where that’s entered the popular consciousness. We’ll talk about some of the aspects naval architects consider when designing oceangoing ships, and how you can use them to invent spaceships that feel like they match the feel of your setting.

As a bonus for steampunk fans/writers, we’ll consider how you can apply the same logic to airships.

Fanworks
There are three times as many Marvel-based fanworks as DC-based fanworks on the Archive of our Own: why? Is it because Marvel's characters are more 'human' than the godlike superheroes of DC? Is it because of Marvel's engagement with their fanbase, or their stage-managed sense of enjoying what they produce? Are Marvel's creations inherently more slashy, or relatable, or light-hearted than DC's? We'll discuss the different characteristics of the two fandoms, and how they are changing as more films, TV shows, comics and merchandise items reach the market.

A lot of us will experience a mental, emotional and / or physical slump after Nine Worlds, when the bubble bursts and we're back in the 'real' world. Post-con depression can be caused by many factors -- poor diet, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, alcohol consumption, overstimulation, air quality, or (allegedly) having too much fun! And of course we're all being exposed to one another's germs. And one another's opinions ... We invite you to share your tips for post-con recovery in this session.

Many things have changed since 1977, and many have been changed by the Star Wars saga: what we expect from a movie, access to the film itself, stereotypes in our narratives. Many things remain the same, like the very basics of visual storytelling. In 7 films and 40 years, Star Wars is full of examples of what a movie can get right, what it can get very wrong, and what's in the grey area of "for those times." A queer lady fan born 40 years ago, in a galaxy far, far away (well, in a non-Anglo-Saxon country) will tell the story of how Star Wars can shape the way you look at yourself, the world - and cinema.

Talk

Do you want readers to trust your narrator? Do you want to trick them? Do you want them to know everything about one character, or a little about everyone? (And do you know what the differences will achieve?)

Alternatively, do you want to know why - as a reader - you react the way you do to certain narrative styles?

This talk will guide you through the technique theories of relative distance, narrative levels, focalization, character privilege, and diagesis. It will look at how to deliberately cause a specific reaction in your audience, and help you make an informed decision as to which narrative voice best suits your story.

While we can spend many, many hours debating the (in)accuracy of the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park franchise, there is also a wealth of other things that we can take away from the films. This talk will be focusing on how themes of conservation and animal rights crash to the forefront in Jurassic World (2015), and will draw comparisons with the highly successful film documentary Blackfish (2013). Whilst these films approach these issues from slightly different perspectives, they both present an interesting mirror which reflects anxieties around animals in captivity, animal rights, valuing animals as entertainment, and of course the role of science within this. While they may not be real living creatures in the 21st century, can the dinosaurs of Jurassic World bring conservation and animal rights to life for millions of people across the world? And if so, how can Hollywood films facilitate these discourses in a way which is more easily accessible for the general public?
Content notice: This session will be talking about animals in captivity, animal cruelty, human death, and psychological trauma in animals both real and fictional, as they are crucial parts of the discussion, however I will try to minimise graphic details of these issues.
