For six decades, the English author Alan Garner has written some of the most memorable and enduring children’s fantasy ever published. Rich with British mythology and folklore, and largely set within his own home county of Cheshire, he had made a huge and long-term impact on children’s literature and British fantasy. This is an appreciation of his work, identifying how he has differed from his contemporaries, why his works have entertained his readers so much, and what effect he has had on the genre.
