For several decades the director Hayao Miyazaki held a lofty position as the most pre-eminent filmmaker of animation in Japan. Now with him leaning loosely towards retirement, who is likely to take his crown? His own son Goro Miyazaki? Makoto Shinkai? Mamoru Hosoda? We take a look through the last decade or so of anime features, pick out the onces worth watching the most, and taking a guess at who the greatest directors of the 21st century are going to be.
