The Purpose of Critics

Critics have always been around to analyse, discuss and consider works of art of all genres. They play a firm role in science fiction, fantasy and horror works as well, whether on screen or on the printed page. In recent years, however, their role has been challenged and even dismissed by some readers and viewers. What is the purpose of the critic in the 21^st century –- what do they provide to the speculative fiction community, and how should they interact with both artists and audiences?
