Audiovisual translation (especially in both intra- and interlingual subtitling) and its close tasks (transcribing, cueing, spotting, etc) often require using various tools. Sometimes their use is mandated by vendors, but otherwise choices are vast. Recently, more web-based services have entered the stage, but have they gained more than initial launch announcements without proper work demonstrations? Software also do not surrender, and popular programs have given birth to forked projects aimed at catching up with clients’ requirements. Or did they only add up to confusion with version numbers, trademarks, and functionality? The workshop will try to create a systematic structure of tools regarding their pros and cons on the basis of comparing how they deal with one and the same short clip for the following jobs:

Automatic cueing from scratch or script,

  • Recognizing burned-in titles,
  • Automatic speech recognition,
  • Specs error checking and fixing,
  • Translation and proofreading,
  • CAT integration,
  • Format conversion.

Also, the workshop will give some practical advice on increasing speed and quality of work drawn from real cases. Most of the tools analyzed are freely available or have trial periods, so participants will be able to duplicate the results by themselves during the workshop.
