The source texts for Tove Jansson's illustrations for The Hobbit

Tove Jansson famously illustrated "Bilbo", the second Swedish translation (1962) of J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit". While the source text for this translation, by Britt G. Hallqvist, is Tolkien's 1951 version of "The Hobbit", Jansson's illustrations derive from a more complex origin. We shall look at the role of "Hompen", the first Swedish translation of "The Hobbit" by Tore Zetterholm (1947), as well as Jansson's drafts and notes for her illustrations. Hear some possible explanations for Jansson's sizeable Gollum!

This presentation is related to the presenter's talks given at several cons and at The Vantaa Art Museum Artsi's exhibition on Jansson's illustrations for "The Hobbit".
