Gandalf for President: the Politics of Tolkien

Since The Lord of the Rings was first published in 1954 it has received significant interest from readers across the political spectrum; in the 60s and 70s "hippie" subculture embraced it as its own, and yet in the 21st Century more right-wing groups have sought to draw from the works. This paper looks at Tolkien's own political opinions, and explores the political underpinnings of the characters and groups in Middle-earth to resolve why fans of opposite ideological persuasions can find relevance in the Professor's works, and what this tells us about the author and the versatility of his works.
