Call for Papers and Proposals, Auviqsaqtut: the 22nd Inuit Studies Conference

April 6-9, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

*Instructions Below. To submit your proposal, please use this link (Note: Google account required. If you do not have a Google account, please submit proposals to inuitstudies2022@gmail.com).

The organizing committee of Auviqsaqtut: the 22nd Inuit Studies Conference, is pleased to announce the Call for Papers and the Call for Proposals. The University of Winnipeg and the new Inuit art centre, Qaumajuq - Winnipeg Art Gallery will host this event from Wednesday, April 6 to Saturday, April 9, 2022, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

We are inspired by this year’s theme, Auviqsaqtut [cutting blocks to make an iglu/working together to build an iglu]. Auviqsaqtut evokes themes of collaboration, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, sharing intergenerational knowledge, and building something together. As such, the organizing committee particularly welcomes proposals foregrounding Inuit knowledge; emphasizing collaboration; appreciating shared histories; and building towards the future. An interesting year for reflecting back and looking forward, this year marks the centennial of both the Fifth Thule Expedition and Nanook of the North; as well as the opening of Qaumajuq, the new Inuit Art Centre in Winnipeg. The conference also takes place during the last weekend of the inaugural exhibition of the Qaumajuq, INUA: Inuit Nunangat Ungammuaktut Atautikkut (Inuit Moving Forward Together) and will conclude with a gala held throughout the building featuring art, live music, and performances.

We invite Elders, knowledge-bearers, scholars, community advocates, educators, academics, researchers, artists, postsecondary students, policy-makers, and others to submit proposals for individual or group presentations, including thematic sessions, roundtables, academic papers, and panel discussions. Please see additional details below.

We further invite proposals for cultural activities, workshops, performances and other creative projects, as well as Inuit artistic vendors from across Inuit Nunangat. Please see further details below.

Anyone interested in submitting an abstract for a presentation or in organizing a thematic session, roundtable, panel discussion, workshop, seminar, exhibit, or performance should send their proposal to the organizers of the conference no later than the deadline of December 15th, 2021. The programme committee will select the papers to be presented at the conference. The selections will be made public in December 2021. Registration will also open in December.

(Please note - we do not know yet if international participants will be allowed to travel to Canada for this conference. We are monitoring the situation closely and will investigate hybrid models for presentation, should international travel to Canada not be possible due to Covid-19 regulations. Please also note that proof of vaccination status may be required by the Province of Manitoba for in-person activities).

For additional details on proposal submission, please see the guidelines below.
