Stanley Schmidt began selling stories while earning a Ph.D. in physics at Case Western Reserve University. He continued freelancing while an assistant professor at Heidelberg College in Ohio, teaching physics, astronomy, science fiction, and other oddities. He has contributed numerous stories and articles to original anthologies and magazines and edited or coedited a dozen anthologies.

As editor of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, he was nominated 34 times for the Hugo award for Best Professional Editor, winning in 2013. In his writing, editing, and speaking he draws on a varied background as musician, photographer, traveler, naturalist, outdoorsman, pilot, and linguist. His nonfiction includes books, articles, and hundreds of Analog editorials. He was Guest of Honor at the 1998 World Science Fiction Convention, has been a Nebula and Hugo award nominee for his fiction, and received the 2012 Robert A. Heinlein Award, a Special Committee Award at the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention, and SFWA’s Solstice Award.

In September 2012, he retired from editing Analog and is now doing more of his own writing. His most recent novel is Night Ride and Sunrise, serialized in Analog in 2015 and released by FoxAcre Press in 2017.
