Phoenix Alexander is a fifth-year Ph.D. Candidate in the English and African American Studies Departments at Yale University. His dissertation traces a black feminist genealogy of twentieth century science fiction, focusing on the life and work of visionary novelist Octavia Butler. He has previously published non-fiction features on Edward Johnson’s ‘Light Ahead for the Negro’ and George Schuyler’s ‘The Beast of Bradhurst Avenue’ in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, as well as an academic article on Lauren Beukes in Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies.  A writer as well as a scholar of science fiction, he has a short story, ‘Gennesaret’, forthcoming in the Hugo-nominated magazine Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
