James Langdell has been involved in science fiction and comics fandoms since 1968, beginning with his high school's Science Fiction Fantasy Witchcraft and Weird Things Club. For many years he was active in fanzines, including contributions to APA-L, LASFAPA, MINNEAPA, and CAPA-alpha. At the 1972 Worldcon masquerade, his Captain Dada costume was lightly splashed with peanut butter from The Turd.

On clarinet and piano, James has performed music for balls at several Worldcons (1993 and 2011) and other conventions, including many Regency dances at Baycon. He is music director of the Bay Area English Regency Society and has led the Divertimento Dance Orchestra at historical and fantasy costumed balls by BAERS, PEERS, and others. James also conducts adult concert bands in the San Francisco area. James and his wife, costumer Danine Cozzens, live in San Mateo, California.

He has a BA in Music from UC Santa Cruz. He was Assistant Editor of PC Magazine in its early years, and a technical writer for 27 years with Sun Microsystems and Oracle. At Worldcon76, James performs with Transit of Earth for dancing, as well as at the Steampunk Victorian Ball.
