Lone wolf? Engineer? Tinkerer? Are these images changing at all in sf? Is science still in the foreground (the protagonist is also a scientist) or absent/part of the background? We know that historically in western sf, the scientist was a lone white male and predominantly a physicist or astronomer. There was a time when the scientists looked like Einstein. Has that changed and how? Are we departing from the lone wolf and encountering colonies of scientists now? Do they follow Merton's norms (a counter example would be an experimenter eschewing clinical trials and injecting himself/herself/themselves with a drug)?
