Goodbye to Generic Game Systems, Hello Adaptability
For years, setting-neutral RPG systems have been called “Generic,” and that’s a pretty good name for them. By attempting to offer a one-size fits all solution, they provide a system that works for any game, so technically they do what they claim to do. But much like generic beer, most games run with a generic system aren’t nearly as satisfying as the “name brand” systems where the rules are designed with the genre and setting in mind. Luckily, there’s a third option: the adaptable game system, which offers the universal core mechanics of a generic system along with a toolbox full of options, concepts, rules, and ideas that let you adapt the core system to fit the game you actually want to play.
