Abstract: One thing that anyone new to case research learns is that to do this research right, the cases must be built only on facts. This is an important rule and should always be followed for high-quality cases intended for publication. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t space for fictional cases in our courses and classes. Whether it is creating a case specifically suited to tools and concepts covered in a course, creating a realistic but fictional case situation rooted in real industry knowledge, or fictionalizing a real-life situation, there are ways to do this kind of writing right. Furthermore, the skill set required for fictional cases can enhance the skills needed for writing fact-based cases. We will look at the uses for fictional cases, best practices for writing fictional cases, and even how to share and publish fictional cases. From the practical to the conceptual, the benefits of fictional cases will be presented and discussed in this informal presentation.
