Presentation title: IT design: strategies to mitigate bias

Abstract: With the increasing pervasiveness of technology in people’s lives, it becomes crucial to pay greater attention to the biases inherent in IT. Decision biases and heuristics have a considerable impact on technology design and development processes, influencing the ways in which users interact with IT and the decisions they make while being assisted or complemented by technology. This necessitates an exploration of strategies to mitigate bias. This presentation will first delve into the sources of bias in IT design, as well as the different manifestations of bias in tech-mediated environments, before proposing various avenues to manage bias. We will discuss ways in which IS researchers can study and understand new and less-known sources of bias, and how the IS community can play a role in forming policies and strategies to manage these biases, making technology more useful and responsible.
