How to read and understand qualitative articles based on grounded theory: A story within the text?

Author(s)/Auteur(s): Viktoriya Voloshyna (Thompson Rivers University) & Iryna Kalynychenko (York University)

Successful academic research always relies on accurate understanding of existing empirical papers in the field. Methodologically, existing research is typically presented by various types of quantitative and qualitative studies, or studies that utilize a mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. While both types of methodologies generate valuable data and insights on the concepts, phenomena and relationships of interest, making sense of papers that utilize quantitative vs. qualitative methodological approaches requires different reading strategies and appreciation of the unique focus points embraced by each methodology in a published manuscript. This professional development workshop offers insights into unique differences of the composition, style, focus, data analysis and presentation of qualitative vs. quantitative research papers, with particular attention to understanding qualitative research papers based on grounded theory. It offers practical opportunity for participants to analyze one qualitative and one quantitative research article in peer-groups with discussion of reading strategy focal points and insights. The workshop should be of interest and value to current Ph.D. students and candidates, and all researchers interested in understanding more how to read effectively papers that utilize qualitative research based on grounded theory.

The workshop does not require pre-registration, however, interested participants are asked to read the following articles prior to the session:

(1) Schinoff, B. S., Ashforth, B. E., & Corley, K. G. (2020). Virtually (in) separable: The centrality of relational cadence in the formation of virtual multiplex relationships. Academy of Management Journal, 63(5), 1395-1424.

(2) Nielsen, J. D., & Colbert, A. E. (2022). It’s not always sunny in relationally rich jobs: The influence of negative beneficiary contact. Academy of Management journal, 65(6), 1894-1922.
