A Colloquium to Help Canadian Business Schools Become More Hospitable to Indigenous Research and Researchers

This full day, immersive colloquium will start with four hour-long sessions on selected Indigenous research topics: Self-location (Teddy Carter), cultural safety (Alex M. McComber), conversational methodologies (François Bastien), and rematriation (Shelley Price). We will then journey to Kahnawà:ke and learn about the Land and local businesses from local Knowledge Keepers. We conclude with a community-building dinner.

Facilitators: David L. Deephouse (organizer), François Bastien, Teddy Carter, Alex M. McComber, Shelley Price

We propose a full day, immersive colloquium to educate business school scholars about Indigenous management research and Indigenous Lands and businesses. Our goal is to make Canadian business schools more hospitable for Indigenous research and researchers by increasing the number of people familiar with Indigenous theories, methodologies, practices, businesses, and the variety of research outputs. This colloquium is sorely needed because most scholars in business schools received little training in these subject in their doctoral programs and have limited experience with Indigenous businesses and territories. This lack of familiarity contributes to inhospitable feelings felt by Indigenous scholars in business schools.

The first part of the colloquium will consist of four hour-long sessions on principles and practices of Indigenous research, including plenty of time for conversation. Four Indigenous scholars will lead sessions on self-location (Teddy Carter), cultural safety (Alex M. McComber), conversational methodologies (François Bastien), and rematriation (Shelley Price). Attendees will be required to read two articles for each of the four sessions selected by the presenters. Each session will feature a short learning exercise.

After learning from texts and conversations in a conference room, we will take a bus to Kahnawà:ke. There, we will learn about the Land and local businesses from local Knowledge Keepers. We conclude with a community-building dinner. We will return on the bus to the Sandman Hotel.
