I received my PhD from the University of Toronto in 1998. Prior to joining Ivey Business School in 2000, I was on the faculty at the I.H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba. I am teaching on several leadership programs. For example, I have worked with organizations including Aecon, Intact Financial Corporation, OMERS, EY Canada, Deloitte, Maple Leaf Foods, Navigator, J.D. Irving Limited, Hilti, AstraZeneca, Hutchison Ports, New World Development, A.S. Watson and others. I have also worked with government and government agencies in Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, the Middle East, and Africa on issues such as leadership and change. I have taught EMBA, MBA and undergraduate courses in leadership, developing leader character, leading change, organizational behavior, and performance management.
My research activities, spanning journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers, cover a wide range of topics including leadership, leader character, organizational change, goal setting, training and development, teams, and performance management. I also enjoy writing practitioner-oriented articles for leaders in the public, private and not for profit sectors.
I have written cases on topics including but not limited to leadership, leader character, leadership development, leading change, organizational turnarounds, crisis management, organizational culture and alignment. Recently, I authored or co-authored four books: Leadership on Trial: A Manifesto for Leadership Development; Good Leaders Learn: Lessons from Lifetimes of Leadership; Developing Leadership Character; and Leadership in Practice: Theory and Cases in Leadership Character.
I am the Executive Director of the Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership. A main objective of our activities in research, student programming and outreach is to develop global citizens who have strength of character, strive to make a difference, and contribute to the flourishing of teams, organizations, communities, and societies.
I am the husband of Jana Seijts and the father of Aiden and Arianna.
