Is Friendship Ever Artificial?

If you can't tell whether a virtual or online entity is "real" or not, does it matter? Suppose you make a friend online and then discover that your friend is a computer program. Does that negate the enjoyment you got from the interactions? Do the things you do to non-human entities in a virtual environment count as "you"? Where does imagination end and consequence begin?
