Many agents now ask authors pitching novels to them if they have had the manuscript professionally edited. I work as a freelance editor and find that many authors aren’t aware of the different types of editors such as line and developmental verse acquisition editors at magazines and book publishers. Then there are proof readers, book packagers and writing coaches who offer their services. Before paying anyone, there are things authors can and should do.
