In this session we will consider the ways in which a variety of thinkers and cultural figures have related to the ritual of binding tefillin (phylacteries). By considering a range of opinions, the intention is to touch upon an even wider and more challenging question – the extent to which one is bound by commandments. At stake in this discussion is perhaps the future of the project of non-Orthodox Judaism.
