Jewish Peoplehood is both an old and new idea, with biblical roots in the formation of Am Yisrael, and more contemporary expression through cultural, political, and even tribal identification. For some Peoplehood is foundational to their self-understanding as Jews; others reject the idea altogether. Today, questions of Jewish belonging have once again risen to the surface as we wrestle with how to respond to the current wave of antisemitism, alongside our universal commitments to social justice and caring for the most vulnerable. In this session, we will study a variety of sources that show how the question of Jewish collective responsibility has been addressed over time.
