Making the Short List: Tanach Texts in the Context of Second Temple Jewish Literature

My Session Status

What:
Workshop
Duration:
1 hour
The discovery and publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls have revolutionized our understanding of Second Temple Jewish literature and the place of Tanakh texts within it. In this session we will use excerpts from Genesis and the early Jewish text of 1 Enoch to experience the diversity of Jewish literature in the second Temple period and explore the implications of the canonization of the Tanakh for all later generations of Jews. We will also explore how contemporary rabbis might use ancient Jewish texts that “didn’t make it in” in contemporary contexts.
