Maya Paley is the Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement at the National Council of Jewish Women, Los Angeles. She leads NCJW|LA’s policy advocacy on a variety of social justice issues, including reproductive rights and justice, human trafficking, gender-related violence, and economic justice. Maya created NCJW|LA’s Advocacy Training Project, which trains participants to be effective at advocacy through six annual workshops. She also co-founded and launched The Talk Project, a peer-to-peer sexual violence prevention and awareness program in high schools, and the Human Trafficking Outreach Project, which helps implement an important California state law to provide trafficking victims with access to help. Maya was very active in the LA Paid Sick Days campaign in 2016, is an Executive Committee Member of the LA Coalition for Reproductive Justice, and was a Steering Committee Member for the CA Work and Family Coalition for the past two years. Maya also led the grassroots advocacy for three state bills focused on decriminalizing human trafficking victims and survivors in 2016. Maya has run college and career preparation programs for teenage girls in the inner-city of Los Angeles, worked on empowerment programs for sex workers in Guatemala, and researched anti-human trafficking and domestic violence legislation in Tbilisi, Georgia. In 2011, Maya researched and published reports on the challenges faced by Africans facing asylum in Israel and subsequently founded Right Now: Advocates for African Asylum Seekers in Israel. Maya earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from UC Berkeley and her master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University, with a concentration on Economic and Political Development and a focus on gender and migration. She loves traveling, karaoke, and watching old musicals.
