Mike Feuer
Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer has long been one of California's
leading lawyers and lawmakers. As L.A.’s chief lawyer and prosecutor
since July, 2013, he has been at the forefront of key national issues ranging
from gun violence prevention and consumer protection to justice system reform
and challenges to federal policies that threaten fundamental rights and public
safety.
Feuer is a
national leader in preventing gun violence, having written some of America's
toughest laws to curb gun violence. He created the City Attorney’s Gun Violence
Prevention Unit and has worked aggressively with the LAPD to keep guns out the
hands of domestic violence perpetrators, criminals, and children. In a
groundbreaking national effort, Feuer joined with the Manhattan District
Attorney to co-found and chair Prosecutors Against Gun Violence--an
independent, non-partisan coalition devoted to solutions to the public health
and safety crisis of gun violence.
Feuer has
been active on other key local and national issues: he has combated wage theft,
tackled substandard housing, instituted a program to protect immigrants from
fraud, and has advanced environmental justice. His office was counsel of record
supporting marriage equality, and he leads a coalition of major cities opposing
attempts to halt the DACA program. His office has opposed the Muslim Travel
Ban, and Feuer himself went to LAX to attempt to secure the release of early
detainees.
Feuer has served
as Executive Director of Bet Tzedek Legal Services, and helped more than 50,000
senior citizens on cases involving nursing home abuse, fraud, access to health
care, and Holocaust restitution.
The
recipient of dozens of awards for his achievements, including the American Bar
Association’s top award for a public sector law office, Feuer has taught at the
UCLA School of Law and School of Public Affairs, and was a commentator for NPR.
Feuer is a Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and a
cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School. He and his wife, Gail Ruderman
Feuer, have been married for thirty-four years and have two children, Aaron and
Danielle.
