CIVIX is a national registered charity dedicated to strengthening democracy through experiential civic education.
We create programming and provide professional development opportunities that empower teachers to take real-life political events and turn them into teachable moments in the classroom. CIVIX programming focuses on elections (Student Vote), government budgets (Student Budget Consultation), elected representatives (Rep Day), digital media literacy (CTRL-F) and constructive discourse (PoliTalks).
Our signature program, Student Vote, is a parallel election for students under the voting age, coinciding with general elections. Participating students learn about government and the electoral process, research the issues and parties, and cast ballots for the candidates running in their school’s electoral division. The Student Vote results are shared publicly and with the media following the closing of the official polls.
CIVIX is organizing a Student Vote program for the upcoming Alberta provincial election. More than 200,000 students are expected to take part from 1,300 schools.
