Explore the intersection of Indigenous art, music, storytelling, and curriculum in this engaging, hands-on professional learning session. We’ll begin by studying the works of celebrated local Indigenous artist Jason Carter, applying Feldman’s art critique model to deepen our understanding. From there, we’ll connect themes found in his art to children’s literature, sing related songs, and create a stunning landscape painting inspired by his style. Next, we’ll delve into an animal study rooted in Canadian history, with a focus on the iconic Haida art of the West Coast Indigenous peoples. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own Haida-inspired artwork, drawing on traditional elements and contemporary creativity. No prior music experience is required! This session will provide you with creative tools and ideas for incorporating sketching, painting, and story-telling into your classroom, while also fostering connections to children’s literature, music, social and emotional learning, and social studies. You’ll leave equipped with ready-to-use project ideas and resources to inspire and engage your students.
