For many teachers “the boys” are a very noticeable, often popular group of boys in our classroom. Alberta has seen growing incidents of bullying and homophobic slurs within and among the boys. Teachers similarly face growing sexism and misogyny from some boys. The presenters provide recent conversations and insights from adolescent boys from Alberta who struggled to resist gender norms among “the boys”. From emotional to physical hurt, these boys show how they navigate fitting in and resisting normative masculinity. We point to examples of resistance from these boys who are both complicit and silent, yet see their actions as resistant among their peers. Our session highlights the tensions for boys who try to be advocates for change and change conversations among the boys.
