In this Introduction to the Science of Reading workshop, Kim will share the what, why and how of adapting a science-based approach to reading in the Second language classroom. Kim will highlight some of the reading research and describe how she connects it to her classroom practice to ensure more students have the foundational skills they need to be proficient readers in French and English. Teachers will walk away from this workshop with knowledge of the reading research,an understanding of explicit, systematic instruction, a tool-kit of high yield strategies for second language learners, and a list of Scholastic resources to support their classroom instruction. Kim will address each of the six elements of the reading process including oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, fluency, listening and reading comprehension, and share strategies to support students’ printing and spelling skills. Teachers will leave this workshop feeling inspired, confident and better equipped to support the literacy skills of all students’ in the French Immersion classroom.
