Hanan Attitalla
I have studied and worked in the human rights and development field for the last ten years being influenced by my own experiences growing up as an immigrant, Black, Muslim, and female child in Canada. I have a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and a soon to be completed after degree in Education, both from the University of Alberta. I have a keen interest in the intersection between racism, education, mental health, and immigration experiences; I use a critical social justice lens as an integral part of what guides my work, teaching, and life philosophy. I studied a Gender, Migration and Development post-graduate program at Ahfad University for Women in Sudan, where I have taught Division 3 classes at an international school. I have also supported in facilitating and teaching educational classrooms in refugee camps in Calais, France and Chios, Greece with various organizations in volunteer capacity. I am currently working at the John Humphrey Centre for Peace Human Rights as an Anti-Racism facilitator. I also work with Centre 4 Literacy to teach literacy and numeracy to children with special needs to become more aware of challenges children face and how to better support them in their learning journeys. I still continue to work with newcomer communities in adult education and out of school support programs for Black and newcomer youth and children. I am humbled by the amount of knowledge and lessons I learn from the communities, groups, and students I work with and want to work with schools and educational spaces to capitalize on the assets students and their families' experiences bring by pushing for equity, inclusivity, and representation.
