An ASPEN Foundation for Labour Education and SCMR sponsored event The documentary, Black Lives in Alberta: Over a Century of Racial Injustice Continues, seeks to bring to light the original immigrant’s little-known history through the recollections of their descendants. Learn about how the original African-American immigrant communities overcame adversity, resisted measures to exploit and control them even as they made significant contributions to Alberta’s society and culture. Most importantly, the documentary provides insights about the attitudes and beliefs that were prevalent at the time—ones that are the foundation of anti-Black racism that persists today. The accompanying resource is full of background information to build teacher knowledge and contains a wide variety of activities for full student engagement and learning.
