This session shares our experience developing a balanced literacy program. Modern classrooms are complex, with students spanning from non readers to above level learners, and have developed a system to appropriately differentiate and target each of their learning needs without burning yourself out. We will walk you through our system starting with Benchmarking (in a way that is actually possible as a classroom teacher) and then moving through developing a program based on Scarborough’s Reading Rope and the Science of Reading, that aligns with the curriculum. We will share our strategies for appropriate and manageable progress monitoring, and tracking your students to ensure they are progressing. You will be an expert on knowing your students as readers by the end of this session!
