Participants are invited to attend a professional learning session focusing on scaffolding foundational literacy skills by combining whole brain teaching with systematic phonics and play-based learning. Practical, hands-on activities and resources will be shared, as well as applications for embedding multisensory-orthographic high frequency word instruction into any structured literacy program. This session is designed for K-2 educators, as well as those supporting students with exceptionalities as a reading intervention. This multisensory-orthographic method is supported by evidence-based research conducted by Stanford University and published in the peer reviewed journal Learning and Instruction, Volume 65. The study outlines the efficacy of this method which focuses on contextualizing abstract high-frequency words by combining a picture, auditory phrase and kinesthetic action with orthographic mapping to accelerate sight word acquisition. This whole-brain method is being implemented by educators across North America. The results are data driven as well as qualitative as educators have observed increased engagement, confidence, and motivation.
